Brussels Is a No-Go

The ABA Journal is reporting that 17 attorneys from Howrey's Brussels office are leaving for Shearman & Sterling.  There are currently 23 attorneys listed for Howrey's Brussels office, 3 of whom share joint appointments with other offices (London & LA).  Since Shearman already has a Brussels office, my guess is that Howrey's partners (and maybe Winston & Strawn partners) will be picking up the tab for Howrey's Brussels experiment.

  1. Master plan. All is fine. Matt Wolf will make a great managing partner for Howrey and his demands for pledges of loyalty are paying off well.

  2. Coming to a theatre near you: "Howrey: The Dumbest Guys in the Room" starring Robert Ruyak and Matt Wolf.

  3. Not good for Winston that their "shell of Howrey" antirust practice will have nothing to speak of outside DC. No global platform. The plaintiffs' work will not be there (maybe lucky for them). The current caseload, whatever it is, may not be at all the same as the future caseload given the problem of generating a lot of new cases by people who have been so distracted for the last year. Wil be interestiong to see what that all looks like by end of year. Very risky. Hope their partners have an appetitie for risk. Fasten seat belts.

  4. No worries - Winston views its bloated Associate pool as a bunch of lead weights that it simply unbuckles to gain buoyancy whenever needed; they want the antitrust group, so if they need to chop heads to subsidize the group's early days, consider it done. Unfortunately, part of the deal is that the head-chopping will be distributed, rather than limited to the incoming partners' entourages.

  5. What is happening with Paris and Madrid, where Howrey had some antitrust assets?
