Roger Klein to Sheppard Mullen. Klein is a true upper-level, long-timer, insider departure. In psychological terms, I put his departure up there with the departure of John DeQ. Briggs a few years ago. (By the way, what does the "DeQ" stand for?)
Any thoughts on the above?

ReplyDeleteRoger Klein has served as Howrey's in-house counsel for many years. He, along with Bob Green (and Helen Kelly), knows where all the bones are buried. I'm not aware that he has much independent business, however, and his in-house counsel position would probably be "redundant" at Winston & Strawn. From the look of things he wasn't going to get a similar deal at W & S, so like any self-respecting upper-level, long-time Howrey insider he's cutting the best deal he can for himself and getting out of Dodge while he still can.
ReplyDeleteRoger Klein was the last truly good and decent person left at the firm who had a strong connection to mangement. He was not a Ruyak lackey, but he still served the firm well, whether the partners, the associates or the staff. His departure is no doubt a breath of fresh air for him, but a loss for those still left who have to deal with poisonous likes of Ruyak and Boland and the weak and pathetic other practice group "leaders." Roger was loyal to the institution of Howrey and not any one person. Nobody left about whom you could say that.

ReplyDeleteFiona Philip (Sidley DC) and Roxann Henry (Dewey DC) sent out farewell emails last night. That's a bigger story, especially given that Roxann is the DC antitrust group's first, large crack, and Fiona is a rising star in government enforcement and securities litigation.

ReplyDeleteRoger Klein's departure is unfortunate for those remaining partners who will be dealing with Howrey's debt. Roger is a decent guy who would try to do the right thing in this difficult situation. The other remaining management partners? Not so much.
